CML Symptoms

  • CML is a chronic disease and may take years to progress. You may at first have no or few CML symptoms. CML may be found before symptoms are noticeable when you have a blood test for some other reason
  • As the number of cancer cells gradually increases, you may experience:
  • Bleeding and bruising
  • Excessive sweating at night
  • Fatigue
  • Fever
  • Pain in your bones
  • Shortness of breath
  • Swelling or discomfort in your abdomen because of an enlarged spleen
  • Unexplained weight loss
  • Weakness
  • Some CML symptoms can occur because of a shortage of healthy blood cells:
  • Fatigue and shortness of breath can be caused by a low number of red blood cells, known as anemia
  • Fever can be caused by infections. The risk of infection can increase if you have an abnormally low number of normal white blood cells. This condition is called neutropenia (or leukopenia)
  • Bruising or bleeding can occur if your platelets are abnormally low, a condition called thrombocytopenia
  • Contact your nurse or doctor if you experience any of these potential symptoms of CML
