What Is Chronic Myeloid Leukemia (CML)?

  • Leukemia is cancer of the blood and bone marrow. CML is a slow-growing type of leukemia in which the body produces an uncontrolled number of abnormal white blood cells (called blast cells)
  • Three types of blood cells are made in the bone marrow, the spongy tissue inside large bones

Normal Cells | Diseased Cells

  • Blast leukemia cells are abnormal immature cells and do not fight infections in the same way as regular white blood cells. These immature cells survive longer than mature white blood cells. Blast leukemia cells gradually build up in the blood and bone marrow, leaving less space for mature, healthy white blood cells, red blood cells, and platelets
